Drucker’s Lost Art of Management: Peter Drucker’s Timeless Vision for Building Effective Organizations

April 30th, 2011

For Drucker, management was a moral force, not merely a tool at the service of the amoral market . . .

“Maciariello and Linkletter provide a very thoughtful and challenging journey in understanding Drucker’s profound insights into the meaning of management as a liberal art.”
—C. William Pollard, Chairman Emeritus, The ServiceMaster Company

“Linkletter and Maciariello have done a masterful job in bringing into focus the connections between Drucker’s visions of management as a liberal art, of leadership dominated by integrity, high moral values, a focus on developing people, an emphasis on performance and results, and on balancing stability and continuity vs. the discontinuities created by change.”
—Kenneth G. Wilson, Nobel Laureate in Physics 1982, 20-year disciple of Drucker’s writings

“Maciariello and Linkletter provide a must-read for a new class of managers and academics who see beyond the bottom line.”
—David W. Miller, Ph.D., Director Princeton Faith & Work Initiative and Associate Research Scholar, Princeton University, and President, The Avodah Institute

About the Book:

While corporate malfeasance was once considered the exception, the American public is increasingly viewing unethical, immoral, and even criminal business behavior as the norm. According to the authors of Drucker’s Lost Art of Management, there is some truth behind this new perception. Business management has lost its bearings, and the authors look to Peter Drucker’s vision of management as a liberal art to steer business back on course.

Recognized as the world’s leading Drucker scholar, Joseph Maciariello, along with fellow Drucker scholar Karen Linkletter, provides a blueprint for making corporate American management more functional and redeeming its reputation. Throughout his career, Peter Drucker made clear connections between the liberal arts and effective management, but he passed away before providing a detailed exposition of his ideas. Maciariello and Linkletter integrate their Drucker expertise in management and the liberal arts to finally define management as a liberal art and fulfill Drucker’s vision.

In Drucker’s Lost Art of Management, Maciariello and Linkletter examine Drucker’s contention that managers must concern themselves with the foundational concepts of political science, history, economic theory, and other liberal arts, such as:

  • Societal values and standards
  • The use and abuse of power
  • Individual character development
  • Innovation and technology
  • The nature of good and evil
  • The role managers play in a healthy society

The authors create a new philosophy of management based on the principles leaders throughout history have relied on to be effective both individually and as custodians of civilized society and healthy economies.

Our future executives, professionals, managers, and entrepreneurs are on track to learning (and perpetuating) the idea that only the bottom line matters in business–a concept that benefits no one in the end. It’s up to us to instill the ageless verities that make for good management, good society, and good business results.

A passionate call for radical change in today’s management practices, Drucker’s Lost Art of Management provides the ideas, concepts, and practical advice to make that change happen before it’s too late.

Social Media Marketing and Small Business

April 30th, 2011

Social Media marketing does not have to be overwhelming, mysterious, or immeasurable, as a promotional tactic for small business. Most business books about social media marketing tend to focus on the variety and types of online media (Facebook, Twitter et al), instead of focusing on developing Social Media marketing plans. It’s no wonder that small business is reluctant to get involved with social media. It seems most Social Media marketing books have lost their business focus and adopted a simple mantra: Be everywhere and do everything – Online videos! Podcasts! Blogs! Mobile Marketing! Those are impossible, meaningless recommendations for a small business owner already overwhelmed with responsibilities.

The process of developing workable Social Media plans relies less on utilizing multiple Social Media outlets and more on developing marketing goals appropriate for this promotional channel that measurably improve profits. Any new marketing initiative, including Social Media, should be incorporated seamlessly into existing business objectives.

Additionally, like any other promotional channel, a campaign should produce results that are quantifiable upon completion or at milestones along the way. Developing a plan with built-in metrics gives your project energy and momentum; for if you really knew you could reach your customers and measure your success; would you still be ambivalent about pursuing Social Media marketing?

To benefit from this book, you don’t need a great deal of previous knowledge of Social Media and the many, many Websites that are part of this online phenomenon. It is much more important to develop an organized planning process that leads to the technology choice, rather than relying on the technology to create a marketing plan. As the business owner, you should be in control.

Social Media provides marketing advantages to small businesses as the medium both leverages and magnifies your existing business strengths. This book focuses on how small business can incorporate Social Media marketing into existing business plans and measure results.

Broken Promises: Fraud by Small Business Health Insurers (Northeastern Series on White-Collar and Organizational Crime)

April 30th, 2011

As the costs of medical care have skyrocketed, so has the amount of money lost to fraudulent health insurance providers. These bogus operations typically victimize individuals on the lower end of the socioeconomic scale who then face staggering medical bills without coverage.

Robert Tillman shows how market conditions and weak regulatory structures have allowed these crimes to occur, and cites recent institutional and legal changes that have created both new demands for insurance and greater opportunities for fraud. He also analyzes the political and economic climate that enables these criminal practices to flourish.

Drawing on court documents, congressional hearings, and actual cases, Tillman provides numerous examples of the three most prevalent forms of fraud: scams involving multiple employer welfare arrangements, employee leasing schemes, and fictitious labor unions. He also examines recent innovations in insurance fraud such as “24-hour plans” and coverage offered by dubious religious organizations.

With the regulation of health insurance currently in chaos, Broken Promises offers a critical examination of this insidious form of white-collar crime. It is a timely book that raises important questions about the definition of insurance and consumer protection.

The Origin of Wealth: The Radical Remaking of Economics and What it Means for Business and Society

April 30th, 2011

What is wealth? How is it created? And how can we create more of it for the benefit of individuals, businesses, and societies? In The Origin of Wealth, Eric Beinhocker provides provocative new answers to these fundamental questions.

Beinhocker surveys the cutting-edge ideas of economists and scientists and brings their work alive for a broad audience. These researchers, he explains, are revolutionizing economics by showing how the economy is an evolutionary system, much like a biological system. It is economic evolution that creates wealth and has taken us from the Stone Age to the .5 trillion global economy of today.

By better understanding economic evolution, Beinhocker writes, we can better understand how to create more wealth. The author shows how complexity economics is turning conventional wisdom on its head in areas ranging from business strategy and organizational design to investment strategy and public policy. As sweeping in scope as its title, The Origin of Wealth will rewire our thinking about the workings of the global economy and where it is going.
